Do you know that you can easily get a European passport for your pet, regardless where your pet is from? This guide will walk through the easy process.

If you are living, studying, or even travelling with your pets in Europe, your pets can obtain a European passport in simple steps! When I studied in France, I brought my 2 cats with me all the way from Canada. When I learnt about the animal passports, I thought, why not?

With the European passport for animals, your pets could travel with you across countries in Europe, the United Kingdom excluded (thank you British).

How to Get a Europe Passport Step by Step

Obtaining an EU passport for animals is very simple, so much simpler than for a human. Firstly, you need to have the medical and vaccine records of your pets with you. I mentioned in Travelling with Pets that it is beneficial if you ask your local vet to bring the medical records of your pets or send you a digital copy.

Secondly, you need to book an appointment with a vet in a European country. In my case, in France, your pets need to be registered with the authorities first and it could take some days, depending on their holiday or strike situation. So I would recommend registering your pets as soon as you arrive.

To save your effort, you can have your pets and their medical documents checked by the vet at the same appointment, as I did. The vet will fill in identity, vaccine history and laminate the ‘personal info’ page. Normally, one visit is sufficient for the animal inspection.

It may take some days for the passport to be fully ready. But you do not need to bring in your pets again to collect the passport. And voilà, that is it. Getting a European passport for your pet is that easy. Your lovely friend now becomes a European citizen!

So in my household, we have one Canadian and two Europeans (French!).
